The Beast in My Head by Sonia Bitca
The Beast in My Head is author Sonia Bitca’s memoir about her harrowing battle with a brain tumor—which she dubs “the beast”—and her journey from diagnosis, to surgery, hospitalization, and recovery. But it is also much more than that! It is a stream of consciousness treatise on the author’s dramatic childhood; an account of her adventures as a cook with the Royal Canadian Navy; and an ode to an assortment of horses and other creatures, as well as to the family, friends and healthcare workers who supported her at the lowest and most frightening time in her life. Consistently candid and contemplative, mesmerizing and moving, this memoir will inspire and awe readers, and likely help them discover their own reserves of courage and strength if or when their own realities suddenly change.
"Something big, very big had to be removed from her skull. Two surgeries later, she discovers who she really is, who she always was. And feels the urge to write. Without compromise.
Is this another hospital story? A moral fable on resilience? Not exactly...
This collection of fragments that gleam and cut like a knife offers a reflection on identity, beauty, social norms… and much more. A journey in the colored, quirky, innermost thoughts of a woman who has nothing to lose.
She has a voice. She has a style. She has what I expect from a writer. Filled with blunt honesty and dark humour, strange, surgical and poetic at the same time, The Beast in My Head is Sonia Bitca’s first book. And it’s worth reading." —Danny Émond, author of Le Repaire des solitudes
The Beast in My Head first time author, Sonia Bitca, is a cook with the Royal Canadian Navy and a self-professed lover of horses. While the Navy has always satisfied her passion for travel, Sonia has taken every opportunity she can to spend time riding and caring for horses. Horses in fact, like her family and friends, were a great source of comfort for her when she was diagnosed with a brain tumour and her life drastically changed. Now recovered from her illness, Sonia, lives in Quebec City with her partner, Mike, and spends every weekend on a nearby farm and ranch volunteering her time to help out with the respective owners’ array of horses.
