Royal Ontario Museum

Tune in to the ROM’s popular Curator Conversations series this month. June 3 at 4pm is Art for the 21st Century with Wally Dion, whose intricate works are crafted from computer circuit boards using patterns that call to mind traditional quilts and blankets. On June 15 at 12pm is Costs of Desire: Ethics of Production in Historic Chintz. Join Deepali Dewan and special guests as they explore the intertwined histories of textile dye and production in South Asia, considering recent scholarship on slave labour in Sri Lanka. Randolph Centre for the Arts

The Royal Conservatory

Head over to the Royal Conservatory of Music's new on-demand digital platform, RoyalConservatory.Live, to watch online concerts, interviews with stars of the stage and screen, documentaries, and more. Do not miss free online performances by the Glenn Gould School New Music Ensemble on Thursday, June 3 and phenomenal Toronto-based jazz talents like Thompson Egbo-Egbo, Joanna Majoko, Alexis Baro Quartet, and Selçuk Suna's quartet at the TD Jazz: Tdot Special concert on Thursday, June 17. World music fans can also catch amazing performances by Caribbean music group, Kobo Town, and Haitian Canadian musician and performer, Wesli, on Friday, June 4. Museum of Estonians Abroad/VEMU

On June 18, the Estonian community in Toronto and all Estonians who love music will remember the legendary conductor, composer and community leader Roman Toi on his 105th birthday. VEMU will commemorate the maestro with a web event featuring archival recordings that you can tune into here. There will be an opportunity for participants to share memories of Roman Toi and his long and fruitful life. VEMU will also be extending the open call for submissions to the Estonian school lore memory collection competition for the month of June. Estonian-Canadians of all ages are invited to participate and share their school age memories. All event info can be found at their website.

Bata Shoe Museum

There's always something new to experience at the Bata Shoe Museum. You can now explore some of their exhibitions online. Learn about the history of ballet by visiting On Pointe: The Rise of the Ballet Shoe or check out everything you wanted to know about socks, in SOCKS: Between You and Your Feet. Enjoy colouring sheets inspired by their collection, released in honour of their recent anniversary. Keep the kids entertained by creating shoe art out of recycled materials, and listen to their Storytime with the BSM series, all on their YouTube channel. Women's Art Association of Canada

WAAC's 2021 Photography exhibition, Unique Visions: A World of Difference continues in the online gallery until June 16, and the All-members' show Summertime will take place in the Dignam Gallery and online from June 15 to September.
On June 17, 1pm, WAAC presents Artist's Voice talk with Anne O’Callaghan, The Changing Face of Public Art in Toronto. Along with her practice and exploration of how art, life, and politics intersect, Anne O’Callaghan will take audiences on a virtual walking tour of Public Art in the GTA visiting some old friends and discovering new ones. Humour, passion, drama... Don't miss these live virtual shows! The first Sofa-Thursday will happen on June 3 at 7:30pm with the touching and hopeful movie Step by Step. On June 9 at 7pm, speaker Susan Spier takes us on a journey to discover the lives of violinists Beethoven and Joseph Joachim, in partnership with the Société d’Histoire de Toronto. Because there is never enough Sofa-Thursdays, watch the Quebec cult classic Starbuck on Thursday, June 10 at 7:30pm and the romance Sorry Angel on June 24 at 7:30pm. Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema

This June, Hot Docs at Home invites you to explore the work, lives and personal journeys of two creative Americans—novelist Truman Capote and playwright Tennessee Williams—in a dual portrait doc: An Intimate Conversation. Get a poetic snapshot of the City of Light in the 1960s in Paris Calligrammes, Ulrike Ottinger’s love letter to a city fueled by bookstores, jazz clubs, workshops and cafés. Upcoming under the popular Curious Minds umbrella is the new speaker series Politics at the Movies, a deep dive into the enduring relationship between American politics and Hollywood, and a live Author Talks featuring bestselling food writer and New Yorker contributor Bill Buford. Their new slate of free member programming features the return of Hot Docs’ 420-friendly series High Minded, as well as award-winning docs and critical favourites like Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World, Rem Koolhaas: A Kind of Architect, and Contemporary Color! Toronto Reference Library

Toronto Reference Library continues offering high-quality programming you can enjoy at home and outdoors this summer. TPL celebrates Pride Month with online LGBTQ2S+ programs, recommended reading lists, videos, featured podcasts and resources. For National Indigenous History Month, celebrate First Nations, Métis and Inuit heritage and culture through Indigenous storytelling and literature with curated reading lists, online programs and educational programs and events. Istituto Italiano di Cultura

June is Italian Heritage Month and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura marks the occasion with a number of events dedicated to all things Italian with a focus on cinema. Events include the fourth edition of Fare Cinema promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, featuring Canadian award-winning director Jerry Ciccoritti (Lives of the Saints, Schitt’s Creek) in conversation with Italian award-winning director Saverio Costanzo (My Brilliant Friend). The Istituto is pleased to support two films being screened at this year’s edition of the Toronto Jewish Film Festival: the documentary Modigliani and His Secrets and the drama A Starry Sky Above the Roman Ghetto. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival; the Istituto is pleased to continue its support at this year’s second drive-in edition. Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir

This June, Tafelmusik’s focus turns to Joseph Bologne, the influential Black 18th-century composer, conductor, and violinist. With the goal of properly centering his achievements, their 2003 digital audio recording of his music will be reissued under a new title, featuring a newly commissioned portrait of Bologne by Toronto painter Gordon Shadrach, and an essay by American scholar Marlon Daniel. Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre

Connect with the Miles Nadal JCC in June for Pride at the J! On June 6 Queer artist Stav Meishar explores the intersection of LGBTQ+ Representations in Film and TV in a free film lecture. Queer at the root is a collection of paintings, photography, poetry and music featuring 18 Jewish, queer and/or trans artists, closes June 30. Join critic and author Adam Nayman in a film series continuing to June 21: Revenge of the Studios: Hollywood Strikes Back. Participate in an engaging discussion at their free June 17 Book Club: Unfinished Palazzo: Life, Love and Art in Venice by Judith Mackrell. The Music Gallery

The Music Gallery is proud to announce a new annual series to its calendar: the What Is series, which examines the threads that tie music together. As the first curation by Artistic Director, Sanjeet Takhar, What Is: Soul is a multipart workshop, talk and performance series focusing on the embodied, transcendent, dreaming parts of music that exist beyond genre. The Japan Foundation, Toronto

The Japan Foundation, Toronto is a special co-presenter of the 10th Toronto Japanese Film Festival hybrid edition, that runs this month from June 5 – 27. Enjoy 24 of the best contemporary Japanese films from the comforts of your home. Explore performing arts from Japan, through 18 stage performances online in STAGE BEYOND BORDERS - Selection of Japanese Performances. Manga (Japanese comics) is the theme for the JFT Book Club Online happening on June 10. Check out the growing collection of manga online through the new JFT OverDrive Library. The collection also includes other digital materials online about Japanese culture, art and language that you can enjoy. You can also find out how your favourite manga are translated in the upcoming online event Parallel Worlds: Translating Manga on June 17. The Bloor St. Culture Corridor, Toronto's most diverse arts and culture district, is a true creative cluster, an arts and culture destination, and a collaboration between some of Toronto's most dynamic arts and culture organizations.

The Bloor St. Culture Corridor offers the public a wide variety of arts genres, from museum experiences to films, art exhibitions to music concerts, and opportunities to experience some of Toronto's cultural diversity, including Aboriginal, French, Jewish, Italian, Japanese, Estonian, African and Caribbean arts and culture.
All Bloor St. Culture Corridor organizations present arts and cultural events for the public year-round in destination venues located in a cluster along a vibrant stretch of Bloor Street West. Each year more than three million members of the public go to Bloor St. Culture Corridor arts and culture destinations, and attend exhibitions, performances, and events. Together, the Bloor St. Culture Corridor organizations employ more than 5,500 culture workers and generate more than $629,500,000 in economic impact each year. In 2016, The Bloor St. Culture Corridor was successful in working with the City of Toronto to have the Bloor St. Culture corridor section of Bloor St. West designated an official City of Toronto cultural corridor.
