March arts on the Bloor Steet Culture Corridor - Toronto

The Bloor St. Culture Corridor, Toronto's most diverse arts and culture district, is delighted to announce that The Music Gallery is the newest organization to become part of the Bloor St. Culture Corridor! The Music Gallery joins our other organizations as part of the consortium of (now 20!) arts and culture organizations that come together in partnership to create and develop the Bloor St. Culture Corridor. The Music Gallery is Toronto's pre-eminent presenter of genre-defying concert music. Occupying a unique position within Toronto's musical ecology, The Music Gallery presents, encourages, and promotes leading-edge contemporary music in all genres. The Music Gallery's home venue is at 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture, Arts, Media and Education.

March Break can be a time for exploration, and young family members will have plenty of inspiration to sing, dance, make music, enjoy art and crafts, see films and exhibitions, and participate in adventures, at the many March Break Camps and family events along the Bloor St. Culture Corridor. University of Toronto Faculty of Music

The University of Toronto Faculty of Music kicks off the month with an Opera Spotlight March 1. This free, lunchtime concert will offer a preview of Gershwin's Of Thee I Sing, UofT Opera's spring main stage production, March 15-18. Thursdays at Noon free concert series continues March 15 with annual favourite Music and Poetry featuring soprano Monica Whicher, pianist Steven Philcox and speaker Eric Domville. The Chamber Music series concludes with two stellar offerings: the Cecilia String Quartet with pianist Patricia Parr March 5, and Krisztina Szabó, Christopher Enns and Steven Philcox in The Artist's Life Through Song March 19. Visiting artists throughout March include renowned composer Howard Shore presenting Howard Shore: A Conversation with Don McLean, March 6, a master class with collaborative pianist John Hess March 7, and special jazz concerts with singer Ineke Vandoorn and guitarist Marc van Vugt March 9, and Juno Award-winning pianist and composer Renee Rosnes March 28. Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre

Kick off March with laughter at the Miles Nadal JCC! Come to a daytime event with three kibitzing comedians: David Gale, Jack Newman, and Randy Vancourt in The Jewish View. On March 4, learn to think like a designer in a free introductory session in Universal Design, by using an everyday item - the chair. Toronto City Opera will present Fidelio by Beethoven, March 16-18, and The Magic Flute by Mozart, March 23-25 in the Al Green Theatre. Drop in to the book club on March 22 to discuss Medicine Walk by Richard Wagamese. Exotic Operas from Around the World, a 5-week drop-in program with Iain Scott launches on March 19 with Opera and the Mysterious East and Exotic India on March 26. The Toronto Consort

The Toronto Consort presents Illuminations, March 2 & 3 at 8pm. In the Middle Ages, a manuscript book was a precious possession, often lavishly illuminated and illustrated. Enjoy an evening where music and imagery from some of the most fabulous Medieval and Persian manuscripts combine in a feast for your eyes and ears. Special guests include master Persian percussionist Naghmeh Farahmand, Pejman Zahedian, voice and Persian Sitar, and Demetrios Petsalakis on Oud. Excellent seats available for only $45. Museum of Estonians Abroad/VEMU

In March at the Museum of Estonians Abroad/VEMU the exhibition, Two Edges of a Lifespan, will be on display. Two photographers, Kristen Dobbin and Toomas Volkmann, portray young and old Canadian-Estonians with short descriptions on their Estonian experiences. The exhibition celebrates Estonia's 100th birthday. March 2 at 7pm, the Estonian ensemble Võlukeeled / Magic Strings will be performing a concert of classical, folk, and pop pieces. The trio consists of the best young violin players of Estonia (ages 10-14) who have been trained through the Suzuki method. Finally, on March 25, Estonian Wrist Warmer Knitting Workshop led by Helle Arro and Maja Matsoo. All events are free of charge, donations welcome. For more information please visit vemu.ca.


The Royal Conservatory of Music

In March at The Royal Conservatory of Music, Exploring Early Keyboard Instruments, an exhibition and lecture-recital featuring instruments from Michael and Sonja Koerner's Collection, will take place March 11, 5pm-8:30pm. $40 registration includes wine and cheese. Register at rcmusic.com/MA. The Glenn Gould School's annual staged opera in Koerner Hall takes place March 14 & 16. Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss II, is a thoroughly high-spirited operetta of disguises and partly mistaken identities. Austrian cellist Clemens Hagen and Russian-born pianist Kirill Gerstein, described as "brilliant, perceptive and stunningly fresh" by The New York Times, will perform an all Beethoven program together at Koerner Hall on March 18. The Takács Quartet returns to Koerner Hall on March 25 with a program of Haydn, Shostakovich, and Beethoven. Bata Shoe Museum

March is always an exciting time of year at the Bata Shoe Museum, for children and families! On March 3, enjoy another session of the Toronto Storytelling Festival. Bring the little ones by for an engaging presentation of stories, amusing rhymes, and charming songs. And of course, March means March Break madness at the BSM! Bring the whole family to the museum to Go for the Gold, inspired by the exhibition The Gold Standard: Glittering Footwear from Around the Globe. Kids ages 3-12 can participate in a dazzling array of arts and craft activities. If your little one is too small for March Break activities, then come by on March 27 for a Mom and Baby Stroller Tour. Gardiner Museum

Yoko Ono: The Riverbed has arrived at the Gardiner Museum! A three-part installation, Yoko Ono: The Riverbed invites visitors to take a hands-on approach to the artwork, collaborating with the artist, the museum, and each other to create an ever-evolving exhibition. Included with general admission. Explore Ono's 1960s and 1970s films with Eyeblink, a three-part monthly art party series. The first event takes place March 15 and features a new performance work by Myung-Sun Kim and shorts by Julieta Maria. $10 General/$8 Gardiner Friends, Students, Pleasure Dome Members. On March 26, join the IMAGINEPEACE Forum, the first of two forums in a conversation series inspired by Ono's peace activism. $18 General/$15 Gardiner Friends. Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema

Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema and The Globe and Mail are pleased to announce their second annual Curious Minds Weekend, featuring three full days of world-renowned speakers leading captivating discussions - all moderated by journalists from The Globe and Mail. Listen, learn, and be inspired as we welcome Vanity Fair's former editor Tina Brown, Executive Editor of The Washington Post Marty Baron, Toronto Raptors President Masai Ujiri, and New York Times bestselling author Reza Aslan, to name only a few! Toronto Reference Library

Artists capture illuminating views of our city streets, in the Toronto Reference Library's Toronto Revealed exhibition running until April 22 in the TD Gallery. This exhibition showcases paintings, drawings and prints of Toronto streets from the library's Canadian Documentary Art Collection, including works by Aba Bayefsky, Albert Franck, Brian Harvey, Vello Hubel, David Marshak and Rebecca Ott. Stop by every Tuesday for a free guided tour of the exhibition. Our Appel Salon series continues in the Toronto Reference Library Atrium with writers Tom Rachman on March 20, Alan Hollinghurst on March 23, and Lisa Genova on March 28. 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture, Arts, Media and Education

March is a busy month at 918 Bathurst as things kick off with The Music Gallery's Emergents II: Duo Holz + VC2, celebrating emerging artists, March 2. March 9 & 10, The Music Gallery is back for a co-presentation with Dancemakers: Multiform(s) + Open Fortress is a multi-sensory experience combining music, colour, and movement. For March Break, Theatre Direct will be offering a camp, March 12-16. Speak Your Body, Speak Your Mind - a voice and yoga workshop continues on Sundays. Istituto Italiano di Cultura

Starting March 1, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in collaboration with R & Company and Design Exchange present Super Design, an exhibition of Italian Radical Design. The show has been over a decade in the making and has come together through extensive research, passionate collecting and interview protagonists of the movement. Iconic masterpieces such as Pratone from Ceretti-Derossi-Rosso, Fiore Artificiale by Gino Marotta, or Capitello from Studio65, it also presents some rare ephemera rediscovered over the years; included are photographs of cinematic interior spaces designed by the radicals in the 60s-70s, such as nightclubs, private homes and restaurants. On March 8 the European Book Club meets for Two Women (It. La Ciociara). The narrative voice of Moravia's novel is Cesira: a character the world has come to know through Sophia Loren's performance in Vittorio De Sica's film adaptation. Franco Gallippi's reading concentrates on Cesira's attempt to protect her daughter Rosetta from history. For more information please visit iictoronto.esteri.it


Alliance Française Toronto

March begins at Alliance Française with the screening of Rigoletto by Stefano Vizioli on March 1. The Movie Thursday series continues on March 8 with Autour de Maïr Verthuy by Hejer Charf, The Child by Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne on March 15, Adama by Simon Rouby on March 22, and La Danse, The Paris Opera Ballet by Frederick Wiseman on March 28. Also, two back-to-back theatre performances for children, Les Moutons by Sylvie Bouchard, and C'est Comme Ça Qu'on Aime by Susie Burpee & Marie-Josée Chartier will be on March 18 at 2pm. Talks in March include "The Second Sex" - An Individual and Collective Success with Maïr Verthuy on March 7, and Backstage With a Professional Dancer with Anna Elena on March 28. In the Gallery Pierre-Léon, a photo exhibition by Colin Savage If These Walls Could Talk is on display March 14-April 12. Finally, a play by Théâtre NOVO, Roses, Épines, Cendres et Dentelle, will be presented March 9, the concert Stradivaria: Ensemble Baroque de Nantes is on March 2, and on March 23 Claude Debussy: Scandal and Mystery of Freedom of Speech with Belgian pianist Olivier de Spiegeleir. A Different Booklist Cultural Centre

Welcome to Blackhurst Chapter Two, Black History exhibition continues daily at A Different Booklist Cultural Centre (ADBCC) with Kathy Grant and legacy voices exploring Civil Rights leaders of African Caribbean Canadian heritage. Stop by and view the exhibition 10am-7pm, Monday-Saturday. RISE! the spoken word poetry series continues on March 1, 6pm-9pm. Paint Night with outstanding visual artist Nicole Alexander is back by popular demand on March 16, 7pm-10pm, $40 per individual, all materials provided. Tafelmusik

Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra's acclaimed J.S. Bach: The Circle of Creation returns March 14-18 at Jeanne Lamon Hall, Trinity-St. Paul's Centre, following its premiere performances in 2014/15. This multimedia creation combines text, music, and stunning projected video and images to explore the world of the artisans-papermakers, violin carvers, string spinners, and performers-who helped J.S. Bach realize his musical genius. Like its predecessors, The Galileo Project and House of Dreams, this presentation redefines the concert experience. Show creator Alison Mackay and special guests host a free pre-concert chat one hour before each show. Chats are free with concert admission. Soundstreams

Soundstreams presents award-winning composer Tan Dun (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) in Tan Dun's Water Passion, after Bach's St. Matthew Passion, which employs 17 dramatically lit water bowls to adorn the stage in this dramatic reimagining of Bach's great masterpiece. Using water as a sound and symbol transition, he explores themes of birth, death, and resurrection. Water Passion is a powerful narrative exploring a range of styles from Mongolian overtone singing, to Peking Opera, to Bach. David Fallis conducts Choir21 with baritone and soprano soloists and a small instrumental ensemble in this distinctly modern reworking of a timeless liturgical text. Royal Ontario Museum (The ROM)

The Vikings are taking over the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) during March Break, March 10-18. Experience interactive games and hands-on learning designed to bring out the adventurous Viking spirit in kids and parents alike. All drop-in activities are free with general admission, and the ROM will have extended hours of operation. Make sure to check out the specially ticketed VIKINGS: The Exhibition, and don't miss your last chance to experience the spectacular Christian Dior and Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibitions before they close on March 18. FNLROM: Equinox, March 23, features CTV's The Launch winner Logan Staats, Juno-nominated singer Brenna MacCrimmon, and renowned storytellers from the Toronto Storytelling Festival. Japan Foundation, Toronto

On March 3 the Japan Foundation, Toronto will be part of the Toronto Storytelling Festival and presenting the 25th Katari Storytelling Show - Hina Doll Festival. During March Break, there will be anime and family-friendly film screenings, as well as films by Japanese women in celebration of international women's history month. On view in the JFT gallery, the exhibition Variation and Autonomy: Prints by Contemporary Japanese Painters, featuring original prints by Yayoi Kusama. Toronto Storytelling Festival

For the 2018 edition of the Toronto Storytelling Festival, Indigenous storytellers are a big part of the festival. As always, it celebrates the theme of diversity. Tellers, listeners, story-lovers, adults, youth and kids are invited to gather for a ten-day, city-wide series of intimate performances, storytalks, workshops, open mics, games and informal conversations. The Bloor St. Culture Corridor, Toronto's most diverse arts and culture district, is a true creative cluster, an arts and culture destination, and a collaboration between some of Toronto's most dynamic arts and culture organizations.

In 2016, The Bloor St. Culture Corridor was successful in working with the City of Toronto to have the Bloor St. Culture corridor section of Bloor St. West designated an official City of Toronto cultural corridor.
