Marking Europe Day in Canada

To celebrate 9 May Europe Day, the Delegation of the European Union to Canada is participating in a series of activities throughout the month of May.

Celebrations began on 2 May with a talk by European Union Ambassador Peteris Ustubs at the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Toronto and the 5th EU Short Film Festival, which ran between 3 and 5 May, at the Arts Court in Ottawa.

Europe Day celebrations continue with a flag-raising ceremony at Queen's Park at on 9 May. The European Union flag will also be raised at Quebec's National Assembly and at Ottawa City Hall. Also on 9 May, Niagara Falls and Edmonton's High Level Bridge will be lit up in EU blue and yellow.

As well, Ambassador Ustubs is also scheduled to deliver a speech on 9 May at a roundtable discussion hosted by the EU Consulates General in Toronto and the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto. And later in the month, on 26 May, the EU will make its debut at Ottawa Run with a team of 100 runners. What's more, ByWard Market's Librairie du soleil showcases – Lisez l'Europe - a special window display of books by European authors in French throughout the month of May.

"Europe Day is as much about the past as it is about the future," said Ambassador Ustubs. "More than ever, Europe Day is not just a celebration, but a commitment we share to invest in our Union, make it work and deliver for us and for the rest of the world."

About Europe Day
Europe Day is celebrated every year on 9 May. On 9 May 1950, French foreign minister Robert Schuman made his famous Declaration calling for a joint authority to oversee French and German production of coal and steel, in effect launching an ambitious project of unity and peace that led to the European Union of today.

About EU Delegation to Canada
Established in 1976, the European Union Delegation to Canada is a fully-fledged diplomatic mission and, as such, the natural contact point in Canada between the EU and the Canadian authorities. It also has a strong public diplomacy mandate designed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of the European Union as well as EU-Canada relations.
