Family fun starts here- Learn to Camp and Fish at Ontario Parks

Summer is here at last and it’s time to get outdoors and enjoy nature in more than the 330 Provincial Parks in Ontario. For many people, the major factor standing between them and nature is the apprehension of ‘how to plan and set up a safe and comfortable campsite. Looking at this, Ontario Parks has developed a ‘Learn to Camp’ Program – now in its 5th year.

The overnight camping experience, offered at 9 Provincial Parks, is the core of the Learn to Camp program. Experienced leaders help new campers enjoy an authentic, safe and fun overnight camping experience. The program supplies each group, which may have up to 6 people (children included), with their own campsite and all the equipment required to camp (participants are responsible for food and bedding). Participants are taught a range of camping skills including campsite set-up, outdoor cooking, and camping safety. Campers have access to flush toilets, hot showers and drinking water at all participating parks.

After the campsite is set up, campers are free to explore the area, experience the park and connect with family and friends. The ‘Learn to Camp’ Program is offered as a 1 night ($86.00 + HST / group) or 2 night experience ($130.75 +HST / group) from June to September and is presented in partnership with Coleman. Canadian Tire is the official retail partner of the Learn to Camp program.

Along with this program, new campers can also opt for the hands-on ‘Learn to Fish’ Program. Learn to Fish aims to equip new anglers with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to engage in safe and fun fishing in Ontario. Fishing equipment, bait and promotional fishing licences are included in the experience. Join the more than 6,000 people who have learned to fish since the program started in 2013. Learn to Fish programs are part of the Learn to Camp experience at the following provincial parks: Darlington,
Earl Rowe, Emily, Grundy Lake, Sibbald Point, Six Mile Lake. For a complete program schedule, visit Ontario.ca/learntofish.

The Learn to Camp website provides a wide range of tools and advice for new campers getting started. Helpful videos, tips for planning a camping trip and checklists are all available online at http://www.ontarioparks.com/learntocamp.

To date, almost ten thousand people have taken part in guided overnight camping experiences and this is what many new ‘happy campers’ have this to say “……. this experience was one of the best of my life. Having people from all walks of life coming together to learn about something that is so quintessentially Canadian. Going camping can be a very daunting thought. This program really provided the confidence to do more in Ontario's parks. I have and will continue to talk about this program to anyone who will listen. I think it's an important program and a noble cause.”
