Veterans teach political staff essentials to the next generation with Seneca College Symposium

TORONTO, Oct. 27, 2011 /CNW/ - Seneca College will offer the first training symposium for political staff in Ontario this November.

Veterans from different political parties and career backgrounds will gather to pass on multi-partisan experience and insight to the next generation of political staff at a training symposium to be held at Seneca College on November 5, 6, 12 and 13.

"Believe me, for a politician, good political staff can make or break a career. But where do you learn to be a 'good' staffer?," said Frances Lankin, past President and Chief Executive Office of the United Way of Greater Toronto and former member of the Ontario Legislature (90-95) where she held several cabinet portfolios. "Until now it was trial by fire....now Seneca is offering a first class, practical, how-to program. This should be mandatory for anyone wanting to work in the field of politics."

Guest lecturers will include:
Steve Paikin, The Agenda with Steve Paikin
David Tsubouchi, Partner - Fogler Rubinoff LLP, Former PC ON Cabinet Minister
George Smitherman, Former Deputy Premier
Gerry Caplan, Former NDP campaign director, political strategist and analyst
Jack Siegel, Blaney McMurtry and legal counsel Liberals [IIP]; Integrity and ethics commissioner

"Seneca College brings together industry leaders to share their knowledge and experience with students," said Seneca College President David Agnew. "This symposium is an example of providing a targeted, profession-specific symposium led by key influencers whose insight can help guide political staff as they embark on a new chapter in their careers."

Spread over two weekends at the Newnham Campus (1750 Finch Avenue East), the symposium will include panel discussions on:

What politicians expect of their staff
What senior leaders' office staff expect of staff
Ethics and legal issues
Media and politicians and the rules of engagement
To register for the symposium, visit https://www.senecac.on.ca/ce/subjects/POL100.html or call 416-491-5050 ext. 2529.
